The rotator cuff consists of a group of muscles and tendons that hold your shoulder in place and enable you to lift your arms and reach up. A rotator cuff tear can happen if you fall on an outstretched hand or it may develop over time as a result of overuse from repetitive motions (tendonitis) or simply from aging.
The most common symptoms of a rotator cuff injury are recurrent pain, limited range of motion, and muscle weakness. If conservative treatments such as rest, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), physical therapy, or cortisone injections do not help, you may need surgery to repair the muscles and tendons, relieve pain, and restore the function and flexibility of your shoulder.

He may use an open surgical approach, arthroscopy, or a combination of both to repair a torn rotator cuff. Rotator cuff repair may also include shaving off bone spurs that are pinching the shoulder. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that enables Dr. Berry to view the shoulder joint through a small incision while operating with other tools that have been inserted through another small incision.
If the rotator cuff cannot be repaired arthroscopically, Dr. Berry can perform an open repair using a larger incision. In certain cases, a tendon graft and shoulder replacement surgery may be necessary.
