PRP & Stem Cell Therapy
SPORT offers PRP and Stem Cell Therapy
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a ground-breaking, non-invasive treatment designed to relieve pain and promote the natural healing of bone, muscle, and joint conditions. PRP therapy uses components of your own blood cells to stimulate the healing process in conditions such a
- Osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, and hip
- Achilles tendonitis
- Ankle sprains
- Tennis and golfer’s elbow
- Knee ligament injuries (ACL and PCL)
By helping to restore and even accelerate your body’s healing mechanism, PRP therapy serves as an alternative to surgery. Here’s how it works:
Whenever soft tissue is injured, your body’s first response is to deliver platelet cells that are filled with healing and growth factors. These platelets kickstart the repair process and attract the essential support of stem cells. Similarly, PRP therapy accelerates your body’s healing power by delivering a higher concentration of platelets with a simple injection.
During this simple and time-efficient in-office procedure, a small sample of your blood is drawn and spun at high speeds in a centrifuge, which separates the platelets from the other components. This process results in a higher concentration of growth and healing factors.
Next, the concentrated platelet-rich plasma is injected into and around the point of your injury. Since only a needle is used, no stitches are required, and because your own blood is used, there’s no risk of a transmissible infection and an extremely low risk of an allergic reaction.
Including preparation and recovery time, PRP therapy only takes about one to two hours. It relieves pain without the risks of surgery, general anesthesia, or a hospital stay and there is no prolonged recovery period. As such, most patients return to their usual activities immediately following the procedure.
You may receive up to three PRP injections within a six-month period, performed two to three weeks apart. However, patients who receive PRP therapy have been known to gain significant to complete pain relief after the first or second injection. Most likely, you will see some improvement within a few weeks of your first treatment, and that will gradually increase as the healing progresses.
Stem cell therapy, a type of regenerative medicine, is a similar procedure that acts to regenerate new, healthy tissue at the site of an injury or wound. Adult stem cells are harvested from bone marrow taken from your pelvis and injected into the injured joint or soft tissue. Dr. Berry performs this procedure in an outpatient surgery center.
Stem cell therapy provides clinical benefits for a wide variety of medical conditions and diseases, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and bursitis of the knee, Achilles tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as sports injuries such as torn ligaments, tennis elbow, and rotator cuff injury.
